World Premiere at VIFF 2021.
Stories That Transform Us is a celebratory 90-minute documentary film created to mark the Urban Ink’s 20th anniversary, but it is so much more than a retrospective; it is a reimagining.
The world premiere of this film will be featured at VIFF at 8:30pm on Oct. 6, 2021, followed by VIFF Talks with Director Corey Payette and guests to discuss their journeys as change makers pushing artistic boundaries while working in both the theatre and film.
Featured are shorts from Burning Vision by Marie Clements, Sal Capone: The Lamentable Tragedy of…. by Omari Newton, Children of God, a musical by Corey Payette, Moonlodge by Margo Kane, Sedna by Corey Payette, Reneltta Arluk and Marshall McMahen, and Les Filles du Roi, a musical by Corey Payette and Julie McIsaac.
The film illustrates how it all began, featuring the artistic leaders that helped shape Urban Ink, and how their work created a space where diverse and Indigenous stories could be heard. Interwoven with the creative shorts are conversations with the trailblazing artists that played a significant role in the company’s 20-year history.

Moonlodge follows the story of a young girl named Agnes who hitchhikes to California in search of self and home. Rooted in the child removals of the 60s scoop, which orchestrated the disruption of Indigenous families and communities by child welfare services, Agnes grows up in an adopted family disconnected from her culture and, as a result, self. It is therefore in her journey to America that she recovers her hidden, but never absent, voice – she returns home.

Indigenous Cycle at the National Arts Centre - English Theatre
In April 2014 NAC English Theatre gathered together 12 Indigenous artists/leaders from across the country for The Summit at the Banff Centre. This was a three-day conversation about the breadth and scope of Indigenous work created across this vast land. Co-curated by Associate Artistic Director of English Theatre Sarah Garton Stanley and playwright Yvette Nolan, 10 cultural institutions participated in The Summit as “Listeners.”
Between May 5-16, the National Arts Centre in collaboration with Debajehmujig Storytellers and Indigenous Performing Arts Alliance (IPAA), theatre creators, students and scholars gather on Manitoulin Island to immerse themselves in The Study. Together participants explore aspects of the Indigenous body of performance work created across this vast land.
The Study culminates in The Repast, an extended two-day public presentation and conversation event which we believe has the potential to fundamentally change the face of Canadian theatre.

The Road Forward - National Film Board of Canada
Marie Clements
2016 | 101 min 09 sec
Clements paints an electrifying picture of how a tiny movement, the Native Brotherhood and Native Sisterhood, became a powerful voice for social, political and legal advocacy, eventually effecting profound change at the national level. The Road Forward’s stunningly shot musical sequences, performed by an ensemble of some of Canada’s finest vocalists and musicians, seamlessly connect past and present with soaring vocals, blues, rock, and traditional beats.
The Road Forward is a rousing tribute to the fighters for First Nations rights, a soul-resounding historical experience, and a visceral call to action.
